Understanding the Deaf!


Helen Keller:
The worst is not to live in silence, but to be deaf to the sorrows of others and indifferent to their needs.


DOs
Use the terms such as “deaf” or “hard of hearing”
Speak clearly and carry a small notepad and pencil.
Maintain eye contact.
Tap the arm of a deaf person lightly to get attention.
Call a hearing person to prompt a deaf person if you are a distance away from him.
Use flash light to get his attention during emergency.

DON’Ts
Talk fast or mumble or shout
Cover your face while communicating with a deaf person
Pretend to understand when you don’t.
Throw papers or other objects to get the attention of a deaf person.
Ignore a deaf person who is among a group of hearing people.

PARENTING AFFIRMATIONS

STATEMENTS
Be glad to see child whenever he comes through the door.
Refrain from bringing up your child's past mistakes.
Resist placing labels on your child.
Take a small child to a petting zoo to help instill a love and respect for animals.
Let your child see you being kind and helpful to your parents.
Set up play dates with your child, no matter how old he is.
Get your child to school on time.
When you say"NO." be sure that you mean it and stick to it.
Have a Frivolous (Playful) Day once every six months.
Teach your child to finish what he starts.
Keep a diary expressing your love for your child and allow your child to see it.

With your child, help out an elderly neighbour.
